From a very self-serving POV, agents just need to do a better job of getting release clauses into contracts, IMHO, especially when signing for clubs like Brighton, Leipzig, etc, etc.

It would be a fairer balance of power between club and player. Whether they need to be mandatory or not is another matter, but I don't really see the point when it can just be offset by setting them at billions.

It's the active vs the passive. It's way more forgivable to overlook the general need for a clause compared to specifically agreeing to a prohibitive £1bn figure.

The counter to that might be how could agents be overlooking the general need for them, but for one reason or another that does still happen. It might even be just because certain clubs refuse to include them full stop - a mandatory requirement would solve that straight away.

Finally, people always raise this problem of high clauses but how often does it actually happen at relevant clubs? Apex predator clubs like Real and Barca basically never lose players they don't want to sell because those players never want to leave. The existence of those very high figures might purely be due to that.

Hmmm now apply those same rules to your job? Is it fair you can't leave and are tied in when a much better paying job comes along? Or you need to move for other reasons?

Yes footballers aren't the same but there has to be a better way than locking them in or what we have now. The mandatory release clause sounds like it could work. Clubs and players need to feel their investment /civil rights are not in jeopardy.

Otherwise there's a risk that the EU and human rights could get involved.
 
Watching today’s game, I’m wondering how much of a difference a top drawer £150 striker would make. I’d rather have an absolute top drawer CM and a CB for the same price

We needed it today. Salah and gakpo struggled to impact the game for a while. Pace and drive would have been nice.
 
newcastle seem to have perpetual psr issues and they’ve just signed the german striker for decent money so surely we’ve gained a little leverage here on the price?
