I rate Adam and would be happy if we bought him, but he represents a threat largely from setpieces and keeping the momentum going in midfield, whereas Ming gives us those kind of runs from midfield that are difficult for the opposition to pick up, which gives us good movement and numbers in attack. We need a winger/another attacker more than we need both of them.

maybe management feel if we are to play with more width then meireles will drop down the pecking order.
left midfielder
holding midfielder
gerrard
right midfielder/kuyt

if the plan is to use kuyt more as a striker then I wager you're still see a right midfielder on the right before you see miereles.

Yeah, I've said it a few times in this thread, people could just be getting their sums wrong with regards to what we have in midfield.

Gerrard, Ming, Adam, Lucas to fight it out for the 3 (probable) central midfield berths.

Henderson at right midfield and as cover for the middle.

Spearing on the bench.

Shelvey on loan.

When you consider the injury problems we inevitably endure, it's not that overstocked really.

I agree too, we seem to have forced ourselves into a mind-set that thinks a good squad means just a good team, we need depth. We need good players fighting for places. We also need another striker to be honest, as we don't have a lot of cover there.

regards

makes sense, especially when you consider gerrard is becoming increasingly injury prone.
slightly annoying though is we've spent 30m (henderson and adam) to essentially pad out the squad rather than improve the first team. if we complete the signings of downing for 15m (for example) it's not far fetched to see the starting front 6 lining up for the first game in august being;

-------------suarez---------kuyt--------------
---downing-----lucas----meireles-------gerrard

carroll 35m - kuyt may be prefered if carroll hasn't improved his fitness
adam 9m - meireles may be prefered to adam as...well, he's better
henderson 20m - an option from the bench
downing 15m - starts

nearly 80m with only one definate starter

if it is for the greater good , it has to be done. Just like as it turned out Torres going was for the greater good.
Not really comparable though. I mean when Torres left it was kinda like when you're splitting from a really hot bird and your mates are all like 'you must be fucking gutted' but they don't know she hasn't even sucked your dick for six months. If we sell Ming it will be like dumping someone who was totally into you and was still into rimming you while giving you a handjob.

Krump sir...your analogies are hillarious

Well thanks, and to continue it, if it's to make space for Adam, we'll be dumping this cool chick for the new barmaid with big jugs who everyone's having a poke at.

If he is leaving, where is he going?
Hey Ross - Didn't you once say you agreed with selling players when they were valued at a price they were never likely to be valued at again (either though age and/or playing at their peak)? I think you cited Robbie Keane and Berbatov as an example.

If that's the case, then you'd agree with us selling the 29 year old Meireles about now for the purported 14M odd?

Fear not, I'm not goading, just intrigued at your opinion on this one.
Well firstly he's 28, he'll be 29 at the end of next season.

In theory I wouldn't be against selling him because of what you say above and because of what Hansern posted earlier about him not having an ideal position in this team.

It just depends on the offer and what we plan to replace him with.
To warrant selling him it'd have to be for Xabi money or more though. If the theory goes that you sell when someone offers more than a player is worth, £14M is not that.

I don't think £14M is even what he is worth, surely that'd have to be high teens by now? £18-19M, sell if someone offers £10M more than that, but otherwise what's the point?

Incidentally, I'm not advocating selling Ming, I'd keep him - but to fit into that strategy I'm saying you'd have to double the purported £14M fee to make it make sense

Neither am I incidently, but if our rumoured targets are signed I think their maybe one unexpected departure to balance the books.

I just wouldnt rule anything out in trying to get better, I think the plan is for a genuine shot at the title in 2012/13 rather than next season. I still see Raul being as good then as he is now.

Winning the league would justify pretty much any fee paid for him, or any fee foregone in the meantime

If we can get Cole and Jovanovic off the books....that should be a priority (we paid the two of them 12 million in wages in the last 12 months or so) rather than contemplating selling meireles. If not finding a starting place for him is peoples main worry then im not worried, the competition can only better the team. If he doesnt start it can only mean someone is performing better than him! We really need squad depth. This was one of the first things Henry identified!
