Florian and the (Slot) Machine

I think at the moment we’re carrying Salah and Gakpo. They’re the more established players who should and must be doing better.

That said, 6 points and playing as badly as we’ve been doing isn’t to be sniffed at.

He needs to strengthen (Slot has said as much) and we should accept there are games, like last night, where he probably shouldn't be starting, until he's fully up to speed in the league.

Wirtz will cook, but he's got some work to do, and Slot needs to get the balance right for it to happen. We're not there yet.

So why do we need him to strengthen? Change how we play?

That money should slot straight in and be a banger. Not shit.

Well, he'll need time to adjust to the pace of play for a start. Then he'll need to find his best position, get used to his teammates etc. Then he'll need not to be a bit shit.

But, I get it, for 110m. you'd ideally want someone to make an impact straight away. But it may take time. Or you may be right and he might be a lemon.

It’s not the pace alone. Any touch he’s bundled over. Refs here don’t give that shit when you play for us. That’s years of learned behaviour he needs bashing out.

I called Nunez after two games. I’m doing it again.

£110 million for a project. Fuck that. It should be the finished article to hit the ground running for that outlay.
you’re howling into the wind even if you’re right after two games, nobody is going to write him off for the next 18 months minimum.

at least you can see technical ability with wirtz, the donkey just looked way below the footballing level he was supposed to be at

For me wirtz has slotted in and offered no more, but no less than szob offered in the same position. And we know wirtz is underperforming/adapting.

For me, wirtz offers far far less defensively than szobo and that's basically why we have a less stable midfield at the moment, with the attack not holding the ball at all. There's more to it than that though as well, of course, it's just we simply aren't seeing enough from him, but we aren't playing in a way that you'd expect to see much from him either, because we can't earn the right.

It's very early though, and this game doesn't really mean much, in that barely any football occured.

Szobs defending basically comes from pressing, as he tends not to win tackles. Wirtz offers similar, just less "all action". I think the midfield instability comes from the base being chopped and change. Our best performances have come with Macca and gravy at the base. Jones isn't as good as Macca in attack or defence.

As a fellow early Nunez caller, I think you might be going to early on this one.

Whilst he has looked sloppy / weak, I think he has also looked clever and hard working, so there is a decent chance he will adjust his game. Also our system clearly needs a lot of work (as an aside, Giovanni van Bronckhorst as assistant manager has to be a little concerning, he was a bit crap as Rangers manager) and it's making almost everyone look crap.

I called Nunez in preseason.
I called Ryan last year in preseason as a 6.
I called Hugo was boss in preseason. (I still think he needs to bulk up and get stronger too)

I'm calling Wirtz. Quality player, but he needs to bulk up and get stronger - I think he will. The last 2 games will have been a massive wake up call for him, and he's got an intelligent team of people around him that will see this. I don't see him getting faster, but I do see him getting stronger and being able to ride tackles. Once he's able to do that, he will be getting us a lot of fouls (Grealish) or creating a lot of danger in/around opposition box (scoring/assisting/key passes). Right now, his lack of pace/strength hasn't earned him the right to show his technique.

We also need to utilise him better between the lines. Our defenders and midfielders are failing to pass him the ball early enough or with the right timing. Like it or not, but I see him having an average first half to the season, and a strong end to it.

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. A few more games and I think you'll see the shackles come off.

Wirtz has been shit, but he's new to the league and only 22 years old.
He needs to learn that the Prem is a whole lot quicker than the Bundesliga. He won't have the luxury of time and space playing behind the striker.

We don't need him to strengthen. He just needs to get use to the intensity of the PL. That adjustment is individual in regards to the time it takes. The transition from the Bundesliga is a real thing.
People need to chill out and give him time. He'll be boss for us.

Strange that people want to give Harvey Elliott the time and day to develop. But this lad is younger and has been here 5 minutes and people are calling this and giving up that already. Embarrassing in all honesty. Thought we were better than Utd and Arsenal fans.

This, but he hasnt been shit. And we won both games. People need to get a grip. Fucking moaners delux.

It's way premature to be declaring him either a success or a failure. What IS clear from his career so far is that he's hugely talented, besides which Slot and the backroom boys must have agreed on the signing for us to splurge that kind of money on him. That'll do for me to be going on with.

Do we have any similar "slight" players that came from the Bundesliga, but eventually made it?

Is it pace? Bulking? Change of position? Intensity? What's needed to change?

He looks best when he roams out to the left forward area. When he drops into central midfield he looks lightweight, as we do generally in that area, even with Gravenberch back.
Well look who it is!

Yes, I do wonder if in the tougher games, like Arsenal, if we'll see Gakpo making way for Wirtz, allowing us to have Szob, Macca and Gravy in the engine room.
