Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Wirtz, Palmer and Elliot are all the same age.

Palmer and Elliot have each played ~86 more premier league matches than Wirtz has.

They also didn't have to settle into a new country with a new language.

Is this all because he cost 100m?

I mean, on the face of it, judging a 22 year old after 4 games in a new league is kinda ridiculous.

Well obviously his £116m fee is relevant, yes.

This is absolutely fucking mental. We've bought the best player in Germany for the last two seasons and you're now comparing him to Elliott after four games.

also, I'd argue that Cole Palmer should watch Cole Palmer videos because his output since Christmas is three goals and three assists.

The point isn't that a good player can't fail. It's that four appearances is way too early to know anything.

We used to talk about settling in periods. Apparently those don't apply when you spend enough money though.

I don't think anyone is excited to write him off. I just think some people are more willing to call out what's in front of them.

He's been nothing more than neat. He's been Joe Allen, while potentially costing 100m more

Yes and no. It's way too early to make a judgement but not too early to be slightly concerned.

I think it's probably relatively rare for a great player to have shown so little in his first 4 games.

Is it that rare? Or are we just hyper focused on Flo since he's ours and cost a fortune?

I don't know the answer, I'm asking genuinely.

Did players like David Silva, Bruno Fernandez, Viera, Yaya Toure, Kante, Essien, Ji-Sung, Modric, Matic, Rodri, Drogba, Petit, etc. (I'm thinking of foreign players who went on to excel in the premier league) all instantly show their class?

We've seen 251 minutes of Wirtz in the league.

Personally, I'll wait until he's had at least 20 games to find his feet before I expect too much, and a year before I can judge value for money.

I don't know the answer either but my hunch is it's fairly rare. It's definitely rare with our great players. Only really Bobby I can think of there. Maybe Fabinho?

I think he's a great player that will come good and be a stalwart for us over the years. However he's not set the team alite just yet.

A lot of this is that a great player slotting into an established team (e.g. City over the past few years) has a lot less adjusting to do whereas we have lost 3 forwards, Mo. is the worst version I've ever seen of him, our FBs have been rotated more than a rotisserie and Macca is a million miles off his usual self.

I'm sure once this team starts to gel and settle we'll see a much better version of Wirtz, maybe Isak will help in that regard too. i also expect him to be better against teams that don't sit so deep for most of the match, giving him a little more time and space when the play is less condensed. I did love his 3 twists and turns and shot yesterday - hopefully a portender.

None of this is a surprise either, or shouldn't be to anyone who actually thinks about the task facing Slot of knitting so many newbies together.

AND WE'RE STILL TOP OF THE LEAGUE, LADIES, BTW!

£100m. We haven't won 4 x PL or CL yet and if we do then he was more than worth it.

I get that the reported conditions for the extra fee seem unachievable but how many other fees does that apply to as well? Maybe Wirtz's are particularly unrealistic, but maybe a lot of fees are also structured like that too? And if that was the case then we should be discounting those fees too, in which case £100m for Wirtz would be being compared to lower fees across the board anyway. It's hard to know either way.

I agree. I think many fees nowadays have add ons but most are achievable because most teams aren't contending for the PL or CL. Maybe based on appearances for example. Those for Wirtz are a very very high bar and either we become the best LFC team of the modern era or we won't be paying out all of those add ons.
