Isakly what we need

I’m not against signing Isak, but I wouldn’t be hugely disappointed if we didn’t get him, either. Carragher is right that Ekitike is probably too expensive, and maybe too good, to just be a rotation option. There’s talk of him playing on the left, but I think it could turn into another Gakpo situation. With Riu already there and Wirtz as well, I’m not convinced that was ever the plan. If Ekitike is going to reach Isak’s level, he needs regular games and a settled position. As for Isak, him going on strike doesn't put me off him per se, but it doesn't make me warm to him either, neither to our club if we're orchestrating it.

I’d be happy if the club pivoted, backed their judgement on Ekitike and brought in a versatile forward who can play across the front line. I'm not sure who that is, or whether anyone is good enough and available, beyond maybe Rodrygo, but the principle seems sound to me.

Whatever happens, though, if Isak misses his game against us then that's pretty funny and advantageous, especially given our tough start to the year.

Look at our bench tonight and then tell me we don't need him.

Tbf we literally have 3 forwards. Even if Ekitike is nominally 4th choice he'd probably get as many minutes as any of the other 3.

I think it's perfectly clear I never said we don't need quality attackers, and that includes Isak.

I don't agree it's essential we blow £135m on a player who is the exact same profile as we have already spent heavily on. There's always other options, especially for the figures being thrown around.

Who do we have in the squad that is the same profile as a 25 year old, proven premier league centre forward goalscorer, who has scored 56 goals in 86 premier league games?

So far, Ekitike looks worth every penny, I wouldn't have said that before signing him.

I get it, but we still need another striker and its pretty late in the window

Sell Elliot, get in Isak and Fofana and we should be done. Next year get Guehi on a free and we should be ready challenge for everything.

One way or another we need at least one forward that can cover centre and left.

I’m all for us keeping Cheesie - looks like Slot might actually play him this season - as much as Rio looks amazing, this is his season to be a regular starter in domestic cups and hopefully Dreamies dreams don’t come true and we advance further in those comps with the likes of Rio, Nyoni, Leoni, etc alongside the standard benchwarmers getting minutes.

However, we can’t leave ourselves light up front.

I don’t really see how you couldn’t “want” Isak - he’s the best striker in the world that’s “available”.

I presume the earlier Carragher comments are from Stick to Football where he said Ekitike was too good to not start - which is fair. In that case however, Roy Keane was also right that top class teams need really good competition for places to drive them on.

I could see Isak regularly coming off around that 65th minute substitution with Ekitike getting a good 30 minutes and vice versa in some games keeping them both fresh and sharp for a long season.

Slott also reckons he can play Isak & Ekitike together, which sounds like a good tactical variation (particularly if Mo isn’t available).

Signing Isak improves us.

Personally I’d ignore the fee, because it’s is what it’s going to be, there’s isn’t anyone out there available I see as good enough at half the price.
