Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Initially with Riera I thought "We might have got ourselves a player here", but he tailed off before too long and was typical of far too many of the signings we were making in those days - a "near enough is good enough" player who, er, wasn't in the end.
Actually he was very good for us I thought and in typical Rafa way...he decided to have a bust up with him.

I think anyone that calls Riera Rlrubbish or ordinary in the team he played for us has lost their memory. At the time he one of few progressive ball carriers we had. and before people go crazy about Macho/SG/Xabi/Torres - well that combination won...fuck all.

We are so incredibly lucky to have you on site. Without you the rest of us might never have realised how brilliant Riera and Curtis were/are.

He was rubbish and one goal in a losing cup final doesn’t change that. Fuck me. He was part of the problem. Players not good enough to ever sign for us being remembered as good. Ffs.

Reira was at or around our level at that point of time. Of course he wasn't a world beater but neither were we. The fact that he was replaced by Stuart Downing says it all really.

I am not sure why we are going back to the past and comparing those players against the standards we are setting today.

If Curtis Jones was put in the firing line though I will say he is not good enough for our squad. I would argue that he had stagnated for a good 2-3 seasons now. To me he just about makes the squad partly because he is English, he is versatile and he does a job, but only just.

Looks to release the ball too early for me. The player we signed was ghosting past players for fun and then releasing the ball at Leverkusen.

It will take him a while to get used to the league and the transfer fee isn't doing him any favours, but I don't see any worrying signs, surely he'll be fine long term

At least no one's rushing to judge a 22 year old after two matches in a new league.

He's fucking brilliant, he will find his feet.
yea i think the fact nobody is bitching in this thread is an acceptance that he’s a really good player coming to terms with a new team in a much tougher league and it’ll take time.

he has been very average so far for sure but it’s a fine balance of getting him adapted asap and not costing the team results. that’s the only thing people are debating currently.

I’m starting to get Thiago vibes. A luxury signing we didn’t need when we could’ve done much more with the money.
Careful you’ll get stoned for talk like that.

In his defence Newcastle away was never going to be easy to follow his poor debut considering the fee and hype around him.

I’m trying to think of the top 25 midfielders to play in this league. I’m talking the Gerrards, Lampard, Viera, Keane, de Bruyne, etc. How many are built like Wirtz? Has there ever been a top slight attacking midfielder in this league? I’m not having Silva as one as he would not make top 25. This league is going to eat him up.

The quickness & physicality is an eye opener for him for sure. He'll be fine (He's too good not to be) but I doubt we'll see the best of him this season. It's going to be hit & miss while he gets used to it which isn't ideal really.

We didn't get him on the ball enough tonight. Newcastle blocked off the paths well.

Juninho

He's got a great understanding with Eki, I worry about the double pivot more and whether we have enough steel with Macca and Grab to give Wirtz the platform to do his thing. I also think it might be a struggle to "carry" both Salah and Wirtz.
