Wirtz and tens in general often need the team to have seized control of the game and have a grip on the possession to start pulling the strings. We haven't been able to do that against either Bournemouth or Newcastle. The first one was an end to end, Brendan Rodgers affair, and against Newcastle we were overran and out played. Now you can't disconnect Wirtz entirely from that, it's not a free pass, but he's also not one of the primary playera in seizing control of a game.
He's 22 years old. He's been signed for the next ten years and beyond, so I think we can park the fee for a year and give him a year to find his feet, strengthen up. Worthing noting that KDB returned to the PL against 24 after previously failing to make an impact at Chelsea and finding success in Germany.
We'd all hope for a decisive contributions this year but I think expectations of him delivering consistently world class performances from the get-go are unrealistic. I'm hoping for some steady growth in his numbers throughout this season and then to really kick on over the next year or two. Between Ekitke, Isak, Salah, Gakpo and maybe Ngumoha on paper I'd be confident there's is a sufficient goals/assists around the team, compared to our rivals, for Wirtz to contribute rather than being required to standout from the pack.
