Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Give the guy some time. By all accounts he seems to be a hard worker, he is talented, and so far, he hadn't hide. He is still trying progressive moves and working hard which is great to see despite not being on the same wavelength.

It was pointed out that Sesko only took the 10th penalty in their comedic show a few days ago, just before the keeper took his. That's hiding and I won't want that player.

You can tell a classy player the moment you see one. And he really is. It's just about whether he can stamp his authority and get used to the league and its style. Hopefully he can, and the moment he does he'll be worth far more than his transfer fee.
That's what we paid for. The massive potential.

All things can be true at once I think.

He felt like a luxury signing from the get go given the compromised state of other areas of the team and right now that reality is being underscored on the pitch.

That said, if he ends being the transformative in the medium to long term no one will care and we will all love him.

Here’s hoping.

The SCM Way :

Season 24/25 - our midfield isn’t attacking enough!!! It’s shit we don’t spend loads of money signing players!!!

Season 25/26 after signing best available young attacking midfielder in world football - our midfield is too attacking. It’s shit we spend loads of money signing players!!!

After almost 20 years… have we simply all just turned into Victor Meldrew grumpy old cunts that complain about everything l???

I really wasn't expecting us to sign an attacking midfielder. I like Szobo, but I didn't like his output in that position.
We still haven't seen a line up with Grav, Macca and Wirtz together.
Against Arsenal is the first time we might see this and I look forward to seeing Slot try to solve that equation, cause imo them three need to be in the line up. It's Gakpo vs Wirtz imo.

We needed a better #10, Szobo and Jones don't contribute enough end product. Whether Wirtz is the right player, time will tell.

He's obvs good, he wouldn't be here otherwise. Whether he's "generational" or worth £116M, that's something different.

And nobody needs to defend him, we all want him to do well. All he's been called out on so far is a couple of games where he's been largely anonymous. He'll need to time to settle.

Once he's had that time, as a £116M #10 for the League Champions, he needs to be shitting goals and assists. A few nice runs here and there won't cut it. He'll be judged on output, as that's why we spent big on him.

Wirtz and tens in general often need the team to have seized control of the game and have a grip on the possession to start pulling the strings. We haven't been able to do that against either Bournemouth or Newcastle. The first one was an end to end, Brendan Rodgers affair, and against Newcastle we were overran and out played. Now you can't disconnect Wirtz entirely from that, it's not a free pass, but he's also not one of the primary playera in seizing control of a game.

He's 22 years old. He's been signed for the next ten years and beyond, so I think we can park the fee for a year and give him a year to find his feet, strengthen up. Worthing noting that KDB returned to the PL against 24 after previously failing to make an impact at Chelsea and finding success in Germany.

We'd all hope for a decisive contributions this year but I think expectations of him delivering consistently world class performances from the get-go are unrealistic. I'm hoping for some steady growth in his numbers throughout this season and then to really kick on over the next year or two. Between Ekitke, Isak, Salah, Gakpo and maybe Ngumoha on paper I'd be confident there's is a sufficient goals/assists around the team, compared to our rivals, for Wirtz to contribute rather than being required to standout from the pack.

Fuck up @MomoWASright - you’re encouraging Dreamie to make Wirtz his “I told you so” mission for this season. 😜

Besides… it’s been 2 fucking games man - and I don’t think he was any more dogshit that a few other players in either.

He’ll be fine - it’s just getting up to speed - he has the ability and technique to be a success.
The most expensive signing by a country mile doesn’t get the luxury of being dogshit very often.

Not when the narrative before we signed him was he wouldn’t need any time and he cost $113 million.

Doesn't that just defy logic?

Every player needs to be given time to adjust and Wirtz is no different, the price you pay for a player doesn't dictate the rate at which a player has to settle.

Nunez, 30 PL games, 5 goals

Ekitike 2 in 2

Jesus Christ, Nunez scored 5 goals in the PL last season and some fuckers on Reddit were begging Slot to keep him around.

No. Hugo has needed zero time.
Ekitike’s lost out on duels and lost possession multiple times. But has scored in both games. A midfielder doesn’t get the luxury of fans ignoring every facet of play apart of a goal or assist.
Ekitike’s going to need a fair bit of time to truly get used to the league. As will Wirtz.

Of course Wirtz will need time. New league, new team etc. and he’s now playing at the highest level. The prem is a step above the Bundesliga.
His style of play also asks other to get used to how he plays. It’s not like he’s a lone striker, he’s all about linking with his team mates and understanding and learning how they work so he can create some magic by finding them with a pass that most players wouldn’t even see let alone be able to carry out well.
